For my 100th post on my blog, I am undertaking a challenge. Ready, set...
- This weekend is Conference!
- One of my two giant rough drafts due on Tuesday was moved back about a week. There is hope after all!
- I read two 300+ page books this week that weren't for any class or reason.
- I had a conversation with a boy and talked about Shakespeare and feminism without having him look at me like I was insane.
- I went on my first date(s?) in months this week.
- Miri's reaction to my getting asked out for tonight - "I knew you couldn't be so beautiful for nothing!"
- I'm making a Halloween mix. So far it is thus: "Thriller" (Michael Jackson), "Dead Man's Party" (Oingo Boingo), "Goodnight Socialite" (The Brobecks), "Shankill Butchers" (The Decemberists), "Moon Over Bourbon Street" (Sting), "Creep" (Radiohead), "Sleep" (My Chemical Romance), "Haunted" (Evanescence). Feel free to offer suggestions.
- I went home last weekend and got to talk to my mommy. Yay for mommies.
- I ALSO got to talk to Lindsey while I was driving home last week - I hadn't talked to her for a couple of months, and I miss her.
- Dr. Dean made us pumpkin bars today.
- Jake (my four year old nephew) has a better dating life than I do. He holds hands with his little friend Gabriella, and when I laughed about this, he said, "It's not funny! She's special!"
- Ethan wanted to stay and play with me instead of going back to "see Mommy see Mommy see Mommy..."
- I went to institute this week, and it was good despite 3 very pointed references to using the Holy Ghost to confirm if someone could be your eternal companion.
- We watched Psycho in my Hitchcock class and I liked it a lot more than I did when I saw it the first time.
- It was warm today and I rolled my windows down while I drove back from Spanish Fork while singing "I Fought the Law" very loudly.
- Did I mention I found a really good song with my name in it? :)
- I paid my rent a whole day early!
- The new Rogue Wave CD is fabulous.
- I am still excited about the Arcade Fire concert last week.
- I discovered the French toast at the Scoreboard Grill and eat it at least twice a week. ($1.50 for two pieces of French toast with raspberries and whipped cream! How could I not??)
- My student teaching application is in!
- I still have one Capri Sun left in my cupboard.
- I went to the temple today and it was lovely. It's been too long.
- Janie got engaged!
- The Office is back, and Jim and Pam are cute together.
- The ward is starting to feel like a ward. I know some people, some people know me.
- At the ill-named "munch and mingle" last week, I met 3 people who like The Format.
- Miri is importing a CD called "Emo Baby, Emo" into her iTunes library.
- We watched another Simpsons clip in my Hitchcock class today.
- Some people have glasses. Some people have headgear. Fran could play linebacker for the Raiders.
- I got to use Shackleton in my lesson for my reading class.
- In 3 weeks, my horrible classroom management class will be over.
- There is a duck wearing a sombrero on my desk.
- Because I am an English major, I have no midterms. Or any tests, for that matter. Except dance, and let's be honest - I'm not studying too hard for that one.
- I'm am only losing most of my facebook Scrabble games, not all. Yet.
- I just found out my mom is in Provo today, and I don't have class until all hours.
- I went to the Choral Showcase last week and it was lovely, even though I was sad not to be in it.
- I'm listening to Ben Kweller's "Falling" right now, and it still makes me very happy.
- I'm not superstitious. I'm a little stitious.
- Our wireless is fixed, which is happy even though my wireless card seems to be broken.
- I get to study Hitchcock and Poe in the same class, and we actually talked about the reason behind the teeth obsession in "Berenice." The teeth! The teeth!
- This week, I found a song with the words "concubines" and "falderal." (Actually, I know two songs with the word "concubines" in them, but the combination of the two . . . incredible.
- Last night's episode of the Office is online now, so I'll be watching it as soon as I get home.
- Short hair dries much more quickly than long hair. Can you say five extra minutes of sleep every morning?
- Funky days are back again. It seems they're back in vogue again.
- I found an edited version of Kenneth Branagh's version of Frankenstein for $5.95, and the good people at the movie site just gave me a half off code so I'd buy the movies that we already bought on Jason McGee's account, so I'll be buying it. It may be horrible, but it has a great cast, and it's $3.00!
- Marci has a date tonight!
- My book club is reading Dracula this month. I sincerely hope to be able to find the time to read it, because it has been on the list for quite some time.
- Two words: "Grace Kelly." And by that I mean the song by Mika rather than the person. Although she's great too.
- I picked up my application for graduation this week, and I'll be turning it in as soon as I have my interview with the education people. (I forgot my appointment on Wednesday - I was eating French toast.)
- I'm more than halfway to 100!
- My social dance teacher didn't show today, and, despite my overachieving classmates who wanted to practice anyway, I left at 9:30!
- I've now finally written my case study on classroom management. In true non-prostituting fashion, I didn't do it when it was actually due because I hadn't had time to do a good job and actually get something out of it. Go ahead, professor. Take off the points.
- I've got friends who (la la la lie) help me pull through (la la la la la lie).
- I brought all of my sweaters back to Provo with me, but then it got warm and I'm still wearing t-shirts as long as possible. Come on Indian Summer. (That's probably not a PC term. I don't care.)
- Oprah added another book to her book club list! (hahahahahahaha.)
- I just watched last night's episode of the Office, and it made me laugh a lot. I need to make sure that my parents see the part about the GPS thing sending Michael into the lake.
- Sidewalk chalk.
- The fact that Treb had songs to add to the Halloween mix and admitted to loving Duran Duran right here on my blog.
- The fact that I just watched The Office on the internet and they had COMMERCIALS. (Sheldon: "I love how they advertise for Direct TV . . . if I had a freaking TV I wouldn't be watching the Office on the FREAKING internet!")
- Today Dr. Grierson had a slide with a picture of Vladamir Nabokov on it. She was explaining who he was and said, "He wrote Lolita. You don't want to read Lolita, but he's still very important." I turned around and raised my eyebrows at Kellie, who said, "Actually, it's on my list." Yeah, mine too. Loving the disconnect between regular English professors and English teaching professors, and the fact that apparently I'm on the wrong side of the line.
- Speaking of Dr. Grierson's class and Kellie, today I wrote and passed a note to Kellie in Dr. Grierson's class. Ironic? Yes, because it was a very silly note about a boy, and I passed it in a teaching class. And was sneaking about it. Yes, I still act like I'm in 8th grade. What's it to you?
- Romans 15:13
- The really awesome picture of the British Parliament on my calendar this month. Have you ever actually seen a purple sky though? I hope that someone has.
- The new wallpaper on my phone - a picture of the twins tormenting a stray cat. And looking very cute doing it.
- The fact that I just noticed that I wrote "I was sneaking about it" instead of "sneaky." Because I'm awesome.
- Last night Kyle said that I have lots of jokes. Impromptu jokes. I started telling him that those aren't jokes - that's wit. And then I said, "I'm pretty much a . . . humorous . . . genius." Yeah, couldn't think of the word "comedic." That's how witty my tongue is.
- The folky music I've been into lately. Wilco. Brandi Carlile. The Mountain Goats. Nick Drake. Sufjan Stevens.
- Grammar B! (Don't worry about it. It's happy. And the reason that reading this blog is - hopefully - fun.)
- The fact that the song "Shankill Butchers" doesn't scare me, even though it would have a LOT when I was little. I have progressed!
- My social dance class is doing a cha-cha to "Thriller." Really.
- Jennie and I went to see Becoming Jane and bought lots of food and it was happy. Also, James McAvoy.
- I went to Psycho Manor with my friend Sheldon after the movie with Jennie, and it was basically hysterical (except when it was scary, which was pretty much whenever I couldn't see what was ahead of me. I am a really big wimp in the dark and unknown.) Our favorite part was what we referred to as "the womb." Feel free to ask for an explanation of this later - I'm pretty sure I can't explain it without using my hands. I did enjoy the Norman Bates references quite a lot in light of my recent viewing of the movie.
- Lindsey is right. James McAvoy deserves his own number.
- I am a force to be reckoned with when it comes to obscure music identification. It may be a useless skill, but every once in awhile it makes me impressive. Thanks to my brothers (particularly Ty and Treb in this instance) for making me a freak in this department.
- President Eyring!
- Savannah was laughing and smiling at me when she saw me tonight instead of running away in fear.
- Hot chocolate weather is officially here.
- Lindsey told me about her Halloween costume today, and I'm already excited for the pictures.
- I took my conference notes in my giant journal in marker. I kept making Miri throw me more colors. Krissie thinks this will help me remember it better. "That's right! I took notes on her talk in pink, 'cause she's a girl."
- I have a really long assignment that I need to work on tonight - an assignment I procrastinated all weekend. BUT, my procrastination made possible a Brian Reagan quote, which is ALWAYS a good thing. "Oh no. It's due tomorrow. I had all weekend (semester) to prepare - I did nothing."
- I have a rap version of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven ("Mr. Raven," by MC Lars) sitting in my inbox right now, and Treb sent me a whole bunch of Nick Cave's "murder ballads" last night, so my Halloween mix is now almost done!
- The conversation in the comments here between Treb and Miri.
- The fact that I just found a song called "The Wolf that Lives in Lindsey" (take that Lin!) by Joni Mitchell. I haven't listened to it yet, but I think with a title like that, it must be quality. Google, my friends, is an amazing thing.
- I finally get to see Serenity this weekend!
- Miri's suggestion that the reason we've both had nights when we couldn't sleep until about 4am was that there could be something in the air . . . like pollen. Radioactive pollen.
- Krissie's best friend had a baby last night!
- Miri liked this idea and copied it on her blog. More lists for everyone!
- There are a LOT of comments on this post! True, they are from the same 3(?) people, but it looks like a lot of people are reading.
- I got to blow bubbles with Ethan for half an hour today, and I got paid for it.
- The drought is broken! (You know the one I'm talking about.)
- Jennie's cute blue polka dot shirt, which I borrowed last week and love. Also, Jennie.
- Todd, Jonathan, The Bass, and Jason came to visit us last night!
- Elder Scott "going Elder Maxwell on us." (You know. The cosmos and all.)
- Carrie leaves for England TOMORROW!!!
- Apparently I am in line to inherit Treb's vast fortune someday.
- There was something on my iPod that my sister in law actually liked! ("Dark Blue" by Jack's Mannequin, in case you wondered.)
- I didn't have to buy my own lunch today. ;)
- Marci, in general, is a fabulous roommate, and I'm not sure that I've mentioned her yet, so just in case, she definitely makes me happy.
- Elder Uchtdorf's reasons to rejoice, which I was going to quote here, but can't because the transcripts of talks from conference don't go up until Thursday, and I don't have time to listen to the whole thing again. (I just checked. Sorry.) But you probably know what I mean, or can find out.
Yay! Thank you all for staying with me for the first 100 posts, and for coming back to this one even though it took me several days to finish. Now . . . to my homework. :(

i have so many responses to this! let's see if i can get them all out.
1. i loved talking to you on saturday. i miss you too.
2. the office was amazing last night, "i guess he can't get ANY girl he wants". ;)
3. scrabble takes practice. i suggest you don't play against brad riching for the time being though - he's killing me deader than dead. it's rough.
4. yay for conference!
5. i want to hear about that date AND that reaction of miri's is the best.
6. oh the stories i could tell you about the dating scene in primary...worse than high school my friend.
7. i love capri sun and fully understand the utter joy associated with having one left in the cupboard.
8. Halloween mixes are cool. and i'm going to be stealing some music from you while i visit.
okay...i think that covered it. oh wait. i was going to say that i'm a little jealous that there are songs with your name in them...know of any songs with MY name in them? just curious. i'm 99% sure there are not. oh well.
also. i heart you.
Halloween mix songs:
This one may be a little tricky to find. I only have it on tape myself. When Duran Duran temporarily broke up (don't laugh, somewhere deep inside them, even though they may be ashamed to admit it, everyone really loves Duran Duran) they made a band called Arcadia that did one album. Two songs: "El Diablo" and "Lady Ice". The latter begins with about a two minute prelude of spooky noises (creaking doors, wailing guitars, etc.) I used to put it on a loop when passing out candy to the kids.
And your mix will not be complete without at least one (though it should probably contain two or three songs) by Nick Cave (Ty will agree with me on this). Anything off of "Murder Ballads" will do. I can make specific recommendations and send them if you want me to.
And why do you have to keep rubbing in the song with your name in it? Unless I write one, no one is ever going to write a song with my name in it. One syllable, doesn't rhyme with anything, 'nuff said.
because i have so little to do at work today...
i need to get new music but there are SONGS i want but i don't want to buy all of the CDs. dilemma.
also - i love this list and how it gets longer every time i come across it.
Megan! Thanks for the hilarious list. I can't wait to read all 100. :) OH WAIT. You're taking social dance? Guess what – I'm taking social dance! We'll have to dance this winter.
james mcavoy should be a number all to himself. he's just that great. and yummy.
I'm going to copy you.
Also, I am with Treb on this one. You will never find a song in English with my name in it, so quit gloating.
:P
No. 59
Umm. . . for the record, I did not admit to liking Duran Duran. I said everyone likes Duran Duran. As Rimbaud said, "I is another." I therefore exclude myself from the set "everyone". Stick that in your logic pipe and smoke it.
Btw, I know that you are an English major and all (and it's a good thing Lolita is on your list), but you should stop neglecting your French and catch up on Rimbaud before the new Todd Haynes Dylan biopic comes out. I'm going to have to discuss this film with someone and I'm drafting you.
Also I think that the number of times I have cited Dylan (Bob not Thomas) on your blog should preemptively absolve me of anything I may or may not have said or implied about Duran Duran.
No. 75 has a perfectly reasonable explanation that requires another quote from High Fidelity. This script adaptation is brilliant in its brevity, but the book is so much better I have taken the liberty to transcribe half a page here. It should fall within fair use:
"A while back, when Dick and Barry and I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not what you are like, Barry proposed the idea of a questionnaire for prospective partners, a two- or three-page multiple-choice document that covered all the music/film/TV/book bases. It was intended to a) dispense with awkward conversation, and b) to prevent a chap from leaping into bed with someone who might, at a later date, turn out to have every Julio Iglesias record ever made. It amused us at the time, although Barry, being Barry, went one stage further: he compiled the questionnaire and presented it to some poor woman he was interested in, and she hit him with it. But there was an important and essential truth contained in the idea, and the truth was that these things matter, and it’s no good pretending that any relationship has a future if your record collections disagree violently, or if your favorite films wouldn’t even speak to each other if they met at a party."
This, of course, belies much of the wisdom contained in the film Annie Hall, which still may be the greatest film about relationships ever. I had forgotten that, but I saw it again this weekend.
Oh, and I think I'm going to write a song called "Miri". I don't know any Miris, but it seems a downright lyrical name if you ask me.
Dear Treb,
If you wrote that song I would probably have to marry you.
That is all.
Dear Miri,
I was going to make a crack about BYU girls and their obsession with marriage, but decided instead on a more reasonable plea because I was thinking that in light of No. 42 on Megan's list, it would be cool to have a trio of songs with the word "concubines" in it. So. . . if I write said song. . . do you think we could come up with another arrangement?
Also, despite my enthusiasm for the project, we may want to put it off until November since Meg seems to have inspired a mindset centered on Halloween and murder ballads. My first brainstorming attempts included "Miri, Miri, on the wall. . ." and the observation that Miri rhymes with "eerie". May I suggest that we wait until loves reigns in the world again?
I leave it entirely up to you.
Incidentally, for all you Halloweenies out there, research has turned up a paper on JSTOR entitled "Murder Ballads of Mormondom". Might be a good one to read during FHE this month.
I really need to get a life, don't I?
I have more responses, so here we go:
No. 74 is probably the truest item on this list.
I hope my halloween costume lives up to expectations.
Your use of "sneaking" and "sneaky" in this list reminded me of the two times I used the word "sneaked" in posts last week. I remember them both because I wrote "snuck" first in each case then rewrote it because that word looks terrible. Then I thought, how can words look terrible? Well, friend, I can't tell you how, I just know that some do.
In response to the songs with our names in them (or lack thereof) topic. At least there is a real word that rhymes with Miri. I've tried to find a real word that rhymes with Lindsey my entire life and all anyone ever comes up with is "pinsey". How on earth is that a REAL word? it's not, that's how. This is a sore subject (if you hadn't noticed). Also, i think a murderous ballad about a marriage to miri and some concubines would be all the rage nowadays. I'd gladly listen to it.
and finally, i'm excited for the number of times i was included on this list AND i'm excited to read the rest. yay for lists and yay for megan!
More for the Halloween mix:
"Werewolves of London" - Warren Zevon
Also, if you are including Boing's Dead Man's Party, you should also consider "No One Lives Forever".
I can send either or both if you are interested.
Good luck on your project! Congrats on the 100.
As for No. 96 - you are in line to inherit my vast fortune unless
a) I write the song and Miri makes good on her offer to be my wife, or
b) accepts my counter-offer (contractual legal-speak there) to make her my concubine, or
c) both of the above, but she turns out to have every Julio Iglesias record ever made and I give her a writ of divorce or deconcubinage
In which case, you're back in.
Dear Treb,
First I would like to point out that, in my defense, in April I will have made it through five years at BYU without getting married. That is an accomplishment for which I feel I deserve credit.
Second, I need to know more about this fortune that I will be stealing from Megan should the previously mentioned marital transaction take place.
Third, I would prefer the marriage situation to the second option, but I have no objection to your having as many concubines as you like, and you can write songs about them if you want.
i can't believe you found a song with my name...and it's even in the title. you are amazing. also...concubinage? possibly the best word ever.
Unless you count deconcubinage...
haha...that is what i meant to type. i haven't gotten much sleep lately. haha.
Megan I read your blog, it's like a Christmas miracle!!! Also I love you a lot!!!!!
hey no fair, if jennie's going to be reading roommate blogs she has to read mine too!
stop blog discrimination! blogs have feelings too! all blogs are created equal! free the blogs!
Dear Miri,
Some things need clarification before I can give you the credit you say you deserve or the fortune you seem so keen on.
1) Are you going on your fifth year at BYU because you are say, a double major in molecular biology and structural linguistics with an emphasis on thematic variants in Hungarian folk songs and you still have a reading list to complete? or have you been holding out and taking ballroom dance classes in hopes that one more year will do the trick? Or is there a perfectly reasonable third explanation? I don’t mean the question in a mean-spirited way, but my suspicions were raised by your second query.
2)You see, had you inquired further after the kind of love that lifts me into the lyrical heights necessary for poetic composition, you may have been marriageable material. Instead, you immediately investigated the possibility of a “fortune” leading me to believe that you may be what is known in common parlance as a gold-digger. I admit it was sort of a trap, but I am hurt that you fell into it. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, etc.
3)My suspicions were further aroused by your complete lack of jealousy. As long as you get to be the legitimate wife (which of course entitles you to said fortune) I can have as many concubines as I like and write songs about them all I want. Not even Rachel was so noble. O Fortuna! velut luna statu variabilis semper crescis aut decrescis vita detestabilis. . . While I appreciate the open-mindedness of your sentiment, it does seem rather cruel and cold-hearted coming hard on the heels of the fortune inquiry.
4)Your latest post led me to your blog. In your 51 list, there is both a picture of some guy who looks nothing like me and a reference to ring shopping with some guy whose name also does not seem to be mine. What’s going on here? Don’t you know how Mormonism works? Are you some kind of raging feminist? We’ve talked about me having other wives and concubines, but never have you mentioned that you expected the same privileges. As I said, some things need clarification before I feel that I can open my heart or my wallet to show you their contents.
Confused, disillusioned, and broken-hearted. . .
miri - my friend deanna (she's the Lady Susan blog on my links) also reads your blog, just so you know. you do have readership. :)
